I apologize for the inevitable length of this. I tend to find that including as many details as possible makes stuff like this go much faster for everyone involved.
The key players in this story (at least I THINK they are) would be my HP laptop that runs Windows 10, Adobe Audition CS5.5, and a Focusrite Scarlett Solo gen. 2 interface. This version of Audition is something I got as student with various other Adobe programs, but my teachers actually had us use Audition 3.0 because even they knew this version is not as good. The flash drive I had that on has been missing in action for a few years, however, and I've replaced computers since then.
I got this interface about six months ago, and a few weeks later I found I was periodically getting various BSODs after unplugging it either while Audition was still running or just after closing it. Admittedly, I don't bother to click that "safely remove hardware" thing, but I can't even find it half the time on this OS. I didn't worry too much because everything involved would make a complete recovery after the computer restarted. At first.
Two or three months ago, Audition periodically started having what to me seem to be random errors. It would crash mid-use while running with or without anything plugged in, show the waveform recording but then all or part of the file was blank after I saved it and reopened while still being the correct length, etc. One day I had another BSOD incident, but I don't recall if an Audition crash happened before it or not. Once my computer had started up again, Audition wouldn't start and instead gave me error messages and sometimes more stop errors. In the middle of me trying to Google-Fu a solution, I somehow ended up needing to reinstall Windows entirely, and thus all of my programs.
Between then and now the Audition errors only popped up two or three times and I thought I had the Focusrite (if that's even the source) BSOD thing managed. Then a few days ago, Audition decided it had crashed, had nothing on the last half of a single recording, and after closing it and unplugging the Focusrite one of those lovely blue screens showed up again. Now I once again can't even get Audition to start up now. It gives me a Runtime Error, then says it stopped working and automatically closes. I will not repeat the methods I used last time that ended with a full reinstall. NEVER AGAIN.
But wait, there's more! I've been looking into audiobook production lately, and have learned that access to Pre-Roll would save me a ton of time in the long run. Audition 5.5 doesn't have that, and I'm not certain if any of the older or newer versions include it. The Scarlett interface came with a download of Pro Tools First, which I'm assuming is some super-cheap pared down version that they'll still make me pay for in the long run. I haven't been able to make much progress in getting that program to work correctly either, however. The Pre-Roll would never run no matter what I tried (and I did read the manual for it), and also half the time I recorded I ended up sounding like a chipmunk. I feel I should note that I haven't had the time to devote several consecutive hours to just messing around with the program yet.
I DO have Audacity installed, mostly because I find its noise reduction better than Audition's. I've been using it for the recording I've had to do since this happened, which hasn't been very much but there still haven't been any problems that I've noticed yet. When it comes to multitasking and easy dynamic adjustments, though, Audacity is not ideal for my main recording and editing software, and I'm very out of practice with it.
Okay, now my questions!
Thanks!

Okay, now my questions!
- Does anyone have an idea about what's wrong? Is it fixable in a not horribly stressful way?
- Even if it IS fixable, is Audition 5.5 even worth the hassle at this point?
- What should I use if not that? One of the other programs I mentioned? Something else entirely? I'd particularly like one with both pre-roll and the easier editing/multiple file running capability without having to dig too deep into my pocket, but considering I'm going to need something reliable if I'm going to make a full professional career out of this, I am willing to consider more dependable programs that aren't free or cheap.
Thanks!
