Howdy. I recently moved off of USB microphones and on to an xlr input condenser mic (Shure SM57), pre-amp (Goldenage Pre73 MKIII) and interface (Line6 UX2). When I take out the pre-amp, I sound find with a hint of background noise that I'm capable of dealing with, but as soon as I set up my pre-amp, I get a distinctly different sound that is almost like an old timey radio, and I can't work out what the cause would be. I can notice a distinctly clearer sound with even less backing noise entirely, but it's unusable right now no matter what I do because of how the sound is. Sample with preamp - puu.sh/u1uQX/ebcc2253c8.mp3 (you can probably immediately tell why I have a huge problem with this) Sample without preamp - puu.sh/u1uXG/59b429068c.mp3 (I'm not especially happy with this either) Any tips and advice for getting an actually clear and crisp sound without any problems on this set up? Edit: photo reference in case it's a setting on the pre-amp I've messed up puu.sh/u1wOn/7147c7f09a.jpg

I haven't ever used a preamp, but by any chance do you have it set to bass-cut, if not on the physical preamp itself, then in the settings in your DAW? Or, do you have it set to bass-boost for your interface on its own without the preamp (I'm not sure if the preamp could override that if it's on the physical interface, but again, in your DAW settings?)
When I switch out microphones, Audacity automatically switches to the settings I have set up for *that* microphone, which is why I ask.
Not sure what else it might be (instead of or in addition to that) but could be a starting point? Anyway I hope that helps! =)

Okay, I see two problems. "Goldenage Pre73 MKIII: Classic mic pre performance for studios of every size!" - This pre-amp is specifically DESIGNED, at first glance, to make your mic sound like that. EDIT: Try messing with the high-pass filters and the freq boost to see if it improves. There's also some sort of level control that might help if you fiddle with it. As to the Line6, I can't really find any good information about what that Tone knob does, and if it specifically affects the signal going to the USB, but you might try playing with it. The sample without the pre-amp sounds really good. What is it you're not liking about it? If you want the sound a little more crisp, try importing this curve into Audacity, and hitting it with that: hulahulamoocow.com/mattk.XMLEDIT: Right click and "Save-as" - if you just click on it, it'll just show a bunch of nonsense. ; ) (It's an exaggeration of what you actually want, but see if this adds a huge amount of what you're looking for into your audio, if so, get back to me. I'll help you tailor it to your actual needs). Also: The Shure SM57 is a dynamic mic, not a condenser. It's a vocal/instrument mic and it's got a bit of a change in the upper mids, so you're going to get those old-school warm fuzzies from it. It pretty well works great on everything, but if you want a specific sound from it, you're going to have to tweak a bit. Cheers!

Appreciate the help! Problem has been fixed. For some reason inputting the mic via TRS cable to the instrument input rather than mic input fixed it. Not sure why but whatever. Thanks all!

Really glad it's working, and thanks for posting the solution, too. It's always nice for anyone else having the same problem with the same equipment. As an audio geek, I AM curious to hear the result, now that it's fixed. ^_^
