I've been working with a Blue Snowball USB mic since it came to the market, a gift from my aunt & uncle one Christmas, and it suffered a cracked wire set when I tried to disconnect the cable from the mic unit. It's at my uncle's workshop to see if it can be repaired, but because of a recent paint job which I had the pleasure of undertaking, I know it's going to be a while before I can see it back in action if at all. In the meantime, a replacement would be necessary, except mics are expensive and I have no income whatsoever. My uncle has some decent looking mics, but they need USB adapters. Anyone got any advice out there?

Do your uncle's mics have XLR jacks on them? In this thread: voiceacting.boards.net/thread/185/mic-geeks-favorite-mics-whyAbout half way down the first page Duffy wrote a bit about USB interfaces and mentioned the PreSonus Scarlett 2i2 and 2i4, both of which share the same preamps as their rack-mount models. A friend of mine has the 2i2 and I'm impressed with it. Very quiet preamps, nice user interface, and it'll do two inputs and two outputs. A while back I got a Senal XLR-to-USB adapter as part of a project at work. It's about half the price of the Scarlett 2i2. I chose it more because of space constraints than anything else. We didn't wind up using it for the project, so it's been sitting on a shelf in my office ever since. I wish I could like this thing, but I think something's wrong with the phantom power circuit. Even in a quiet room, there's this 1kHz hum along with a bunch of harmonics. For VO work it's not usable. I don't know if this is a defective unit or what, but I'm not happy with it. For my own use I'd go for the Scarlett.

First things first? What was the breakage cause? if your mic is only 6 months old you may be able to get support from Blue!
I've just gone over to an XLR audio interface and it's way better. I have and Audiobox which is really good however, it's more pricey than even a yeti. There are cheaper smaller XLR interfaces like the Blue icicle and the irig for ipad. The irig is cheapest and the icicle around the same price as a new snowball. So while I suggest those should be a target if your financial situation changes ..I'm guessing it's not a help atm.
You could try looking on Ebay or Craiglists/freecycle for a new mic, or interface but it's difficult to suggest a route when you don't have a huge budget.
You mention your mic broke again? ?Have you broken multiple microphones? If so can you identify a common cause? Are you carrying them about? or do you have an unstable boom arm etc? Microphones are fragile, Blue ones seem especially so...so I think the priority is stopping another one breaking.

Any support would be irrelevant. As for breaking them, It's only been the Blue Snowball that's been broken several times for falling off my desk for stupid reasons. The biggest damage was the round outer shell cracking in half and had to be Krazy-Glued back together and held in place by strong rubber bands.

Damn that's upsetting. Have you considered putting a foam windshield/cover to protect it?
Used Usb adaptors might be something to look into as well.
