Hello everyone!
So myself and a few other people in the discord group thought of something for the whole community to try. And that is a weekly challenge in the same fashion as "Now Voice This" over twitter! This won't be a contest or an audition though, just a way to keep us all on our toes and expand our abilities every week.
But before we can kick this thing off, we need prompts, and a lot of them! So if you have any fun or challenging ideas where people will have to get creative to make a 10-20 second long submission out of, feel free to post your ideas on this thread. Make sure to comment on the other prompts that you like as well. It can be as vague, specific, or complex as you want it to be! Whatever you think will help yourself and others get out of your own comfort zones and learn something!
Once we decide on the prompt we will try first, we will put other notable prompts into a poll for people to vote on. By the time all submissions for the first prompt are in, the poll will close, the highest voted prompt will be next, and the cycle repeats from there!
*(Submissions will be strictly audio regardless. If a video is made, I can't imagine it being any more than a black screen with the name and title of each submission as they play)
UPDATE: Week 3 is on!
This week's prompt is: "Try an Accent you haven't done before"
You have until the next voting period ends, which will be 11:30 pm (CST) on Saturday, September 15th!
Also, if you have missed a previous challenge and would like to try for that, you can! But as a rule so none of us get complacent with it, you can submit for a previous challenge as long as you also submit for the current one.
I'll also be looking for new prompts to add to the poll, so if anyone has any ideas of what else to try, go ahead and post your suggestions here!
Previous Prompts:
1. Give a voice to an inanimate object 2. Come up with a voice for a mythological being

Do we post a link to the audio or video on this thread or on the Clips & Critique section of the club? I know in Discord we can also post the link to the feedback section, but do the links also have to be on said sections?

I know in Discord we can also post the link to the feedback section, but do the links also have to be on said sections? Why not both Discord and Clips & Critique? Things might get messy if its posted to the thread here. This thread can be dedicated to the brainstorming aspect of it, while the thread on clips & critique can be updated weekly with the submissions.

Prompt ideas:
Pick two emotional states (e.g. happy/angry, wistful/zealous, disillusioned/sentimental, etc.) and transition between them in a single line or in two lines. (Maybe a fixed set of lines for everyone to say, but emotions of their choice, or vice-versa?)
Pick a line or set of lines that are obviously written for one emotional state (e.g. "Happy birthday, [Insert name]! Hope you're having a good time at your party!") and deliver the lines convincingly in a completely different emotional state of the VA's choice.
Move about the room as the character of your choice. Pick a mundane room like a kitchen or a living room and assume the role of your choice (e.g. the sorceress, the wise mentor, the spunky sidekick, the knight in shining armor, etc.) Then imagine you were dropped into this place. 10-20 seconds of the reaction(s) of your choice to what you find.
The "Yes, but..." Something great just happened to the character (e.g. new job, bought a new car, paid vacation to Tahiti, etc.) but... something correspondingly bad also just happened (e.g. no transportation to get to the new job, monthly payments for the new car exceeds budget, the plane to Tahiti leaves in a week and you don't have a passport, etc.) Either lines of the VA's choice or pre-written lines (not sure if you're wanting to turn this into an ad lib exercise), but the delivery has to capture both emotional states.

One more, though this one will run a little longer than the 10-20 seconds I think you're aiming for:
The bar joke - The lines don't necessarily have to be funny, but pick three characters and have them enter a bar or a coffee shop. Depending on how you want the dialogue to run they don't even have to get to the point where they order anything. Give each character a different role in the dialogue. Voice all three characters.

I know in Discord we can also post the link to the feedback section, but do the links also have to be on said sections? If I may make a suggestion, perhaps we can have one thread every week for the challenge? That way, everyone can post their clips in one central spot, and we don't have a bunch of individual threads being made. When there is a new week with a new challenge, then a separate thread can be made for that one, if that makes sense. Anyway, might as well toss a few suggestions out there since I love this idea: - Try an accent you haven't done before.
- Try a different dialect from the same general region you live in (for example, if you're in Texas, you could try a Boston accent. If you're in south London, try a Northern English accent)
- This one is kind of like impressions, but with a twist: Try a genderswapped version of a character you like that's not the same gender as you. (For example, I could try a femme Joseph Joestar.) Keep their same mannerisms and general style of speaking, but obviously you won't be able to imitate the voice itself. This will teach you how to approach the often overlooked part of voice matching jobs which is matching the speaking style rather than JUST the voice.

Alright. It looks like our first challenge is: Give a voice to an inanimate object!
Everyone has until 11:30 PM on Saturday, August 25th, to post their recording for this challenge. You will also be able to vote again for the prompts that did not win. The deadline is the same for that. Have fun!

Ok. Sorry for the week long hiatus, but now week 2 will officially start!
This week's prompt is: "Come up with a voice for a mythological being"
You have until the next voting period ends, which will be 11:30 pm (CST) on Saturday, September 8th!
Also, if you have missed a previous challenge and would like to try for that, you can! But as a rule so none of us get complacent with it, you can submit for a previous challenge as long as you also submit for the current one.

VAC Week 2 Challenge - WerewolfI had originally uploaded a file that missed the point of the contest a bit by going with a shifting emotion style into the character. In this clip, I stayed as the werewolf character all the way through. I'll leave the entry I scrapped up in case anyone wants to hear it, but my goal with this clip was to try and do some kind of deeper monster voice that's out of my usual range, and I decided on the wolf dude in the end. I had never really tried a deeper voice like that before for an extended take, so it's probably going to sound a bit off in spots, but I gave it my best shot! Finally, the writing was my own. It was a fun challenge to do even if I missed the point originally. It at least gave me more practice than I was expecting to do today! Thanks for running this! VAC Scrapped Week 2 Entry

Here is my submission for this week's challenge! The accent I picked is General American. Until today I've always used my western Canadian accent, which up until this point, I realized that I've been using both pronunciations interchangeably throughout my life without thinking about it (maybe because I live so close to the border?) Because the differences in both accents can be subtle, I recorded the entry twice - the first time in my natural accent, the second time solely in a General American accent for comparison. I've also included the script I typed up that included the most common keywords - which turned out to be kind of morbid, haha. VAC Weekly Challenge 3 - General American - Original Submission
Script:"Don't go to the old pasta factory tomorrow night, Nolan! Stay in your house or somewhere far away from there. There's rumors about a mad man who uses intestines as a secret ingredient!"
Suggestion for a future challenge, mix & match! Pick a line, a character, and an audience. Examples (courtesy of Luca Schuneman): Line:"Twinkies are amazing. I don't care what you say. You're not gonna change my mind." "I'm gonna clean your clock, understand me?" "I'm calm. I'm calm. I'm calm. I'm calm. I'm clam. I'm calm. I'm not calm." "Forces of the universe: aid me! Special Attack! Yellow Fire Storm!" Character:Young Child Wizard Barbarian Mother/Father/Guardian Audience:Inanimate object 8th grade classroom Evil warlord A crowd of 1000 people
