The following is a list of terms and definitions commonly brought up in conversation around the VAC forums and Discord. It is not an exhaustive list of every VO term ever, but it does cover the ones that are frequently asked about in our discussions. Thank you to everyone who made suggestions of what to include.
ABC - The 3 takes you usually give per line when recording live
ADR - Automated Dialog Replacement, also known as dubbing, such as from one language to another
Ad-lib - Improv, making something up that isn't in the script
ANN - Anime News Network, an anime news site
BIPOC - Black, Indigenous, Person of Color
Broadcast - Used to describe content that will be available to the public on TV, in a game, on the radio, etc
BTVA - Behind The Voice Actors, a site which shows cast lists for shows alongside images. Has a casting call section.
Buyout - A sum of money paid to the actor to "buy them out" of their contract so the studio using their VO doesn't have to pay them residuals
BZ - Bang Zoom, a Los Angeles ADR studio that is known for its anime dubbing production
Cans - Slang for Headphones
Cardioid - A type of microphone signal pattern, named for its heart shape
CCC - Casting Call Club, a free casting website
Clipping - Not the same as peaking, is when your audio levels go above 0 and start distorting
Conflict - A part of VO contracts saying you can't provide VO for another competing company until the usage for the commercial runs out
DAW - Digital Audio Workstation, like Audactiy or Reaper
EQ - Equalization, an advanced audio engineering technique
Fi Core - Financial Core, a branch of SAG you can join so you can keep doing non-union work
Funi - Short for Funimation, a Texas ADR studio that is known for its anime dubbing production
GVAA - Global Voice Acting Academy, an online VO class website
Interface - A box which connects an XLR microphone to a computer. Just as important as a mic.
Internal - Opposite of Broadcast, content that will only be shown to a select few people, like employees of a company
ipDTL - IP Down the Line, similar service but less popular than Source Connect
ISDN - Integrated Services Digital, another much older tool for live recording
LDC - Large Diaphragm Condenser, a type of microphone
Looping - Group ADR used to create background crowd noises
MP3 - low-quality small file type, usually for emailing auditions and reels
NDA - Non-Disclosure Agreement, a common clause in VO contracts, to be violated under no circumstances
P2P - Pay-to-Play, or auditions on a website with a subscription fee
Peaking - Not the same as clipping, just indicates the highest level your audio reaches
Perpetuity - Infinite usage of your VO, can cause problems if there's a conflict with another potential job
PFH - Per Finished Hour (of finalized, edited audio), a common pay rate for Audiobooks
Phone Patch - Communicating with your director during a live session via phone or a calling app
Plosive - A popping sound that some letters like 'p' make, causing distortion
POC - Person of Color
PVC - A type of light pipe you can get at any hardware store, great for making your own booth
Noise - A light but noticeable buzzing or hissing in the background of your recording
NSFW - Not Safe For Work, 18+ or adult content
NVT - Now Voice This, a voice acting competition run by Funimation actor Chuck Huber
Raw - Fresh-recorded audio with no effects or filters on it
SAG - Screen Actor's Guild, the American actors' labor union
SC - Source Connect, software that sends your audio signal directly to your client
SCN - Source Connect Now, a free but more limited version of SC
Shotgun - A type of microphone signal pattern, named for its extreme directionality
Signal Chain - The names of all your equipment, in order, from microphone to computer (e.g. AT4040 -> SSL2 -> PC)
Usage - A set amount of time a company will be allowed to use your VO in their commercial, usually the same amount of time as the commercial will air
