I've recently had a bit of a problem with comparing myself to other VAs because I am not at a level of skill I would like to be at. On top of that, this one particular VA that I am comparing myself to seems to always get a lot of roles, (more than me or other voice actors I know,) and, despite us using the same ways of finding projects, he always seems to have connections that get him more roles, so then I am left to wonder how I myself can find good connections. I am not envious, but it is a little hard to have all my friends be VA friends with very little exceptions, and all my VA friends are at a level of skill higher than I am. I do not want to give up, of course, but I would like to know if there's anything I can do to overcome this and get better?

Think of voice acting as a ladder, and you're standing on one of the rungs. EVERYONE starts on the bottom rung. You look up, and see all your friends standing on higher rungs above you, but they climbed from the bottom once, too. Some people climb faster, and pass others, some people may slip and fall a few rungs (or off the ladder altogether) and either give up or try again. Some people may slip, or start to, but their friends reach out hands to catch them.
THIS is how I look at voice acting, and it's why I never feel inferior to someone who is ahead of me or superior to anyone behind me, because it's just a matter of timing on a path we're *all* on. Don't worry, you're "paying your dues" so to speak. Later on, if you keep at it, YOU will be that "cool voice actor friend who always gets more roles" to new voice actors. Before, I'm quite sure, there were others that the VA you look up to now looked up to himself.
